Client: TRAC (Trans African Concession) N4 RRM
Project Type: Road Pavement Maintenance and Infrastructure Services
Budget: R9,523,804.35
Completion Date: On-going
Background
TRAC N4, a vital road network under the Trans African Concession, required extensive maintenance and infrastructure upgrades to ensure the safety and longevity of the road. The project aimed to address common road issues such as potholes, edge breaks, and surface deterioration while also maintaining other key infrastructure elements like signage, guardrails, and drainage systems. Cush Developments was contracted to deliver a comprehensive maintenance solution across multiple aspects of road management.
The Challenge
The project was complex and came with several unique challenges:
- Scale of the Project: The scope of work covered a large section of the N4 route, requiring extensive coordination and efficient resource management.
- Traffic Management: High volumes of traffic on the N4 meant the project had to be executed without significant disruptions to road users, ensuring both efficiency and safety.
- Varied Maintenance Needs: The project involved diverse tasks such as pavement repairs, signage, guardrail maintenance, and drainage system upgrades, each requiring specialized techniques and materials.
- Budget Control: With a budget of R9.5 million, Cush Developments needed to deliver quality work while maintaining financial control across multiple activities.
The Solution
Cush Developments addressed these challenges through a structured and proactive approach:
- Comprehensive Project Management: A detailed project timeline was established to coordinate the varied tasks, from pothole repairs and crack sealing to grass cutting and tree felling, ensuring each task was completed efficiently. This also involved constant monitoring to minimize traffic disruption and maintain road safety.
- Skilled Workforce and Equipment: An experienced team of engineers, road maintenance experts, and environmental specialists were deployed, along with the necessary equipment to address both road infrastructure and environmental maintenance (e.g., tree felling and weed control).
- Quality Assurance: The team implemented rigorous quality checks throughout each stage of the project. From slurry seals to guardrail maintenance and signage installation, each element was inspected to meet industry and safety standards.
- Sustainability Measures: Drainage cleaning and concrete works were prioritized to ensure long-term durability and prevent future flooding, while vegetation control measures ensured clear visibility and safety along the route.
Results
The TRAC N4 project was successfully completed within the R9.5 million budget, delivering a safer, more durable roadway for thousands of daily commuters. The comprehensive maintenance efforts enhanced both the structural integrity of the road and its surrounding infrastructure, contributing to better long-term performance.
